The term felt is the name given to a textile that is produced after a process of matting, condensing and pressing of different fibers altogether. There are different types of felt products produced in the industry. Some are made from natural fibers like wool and some from synthetic ones like acrylic. Felts may be divided into various types according to their functions like industrial felts, crafting applications, designer felts and some technical ones as well. Some felts are very soft and used for purposes that require delicacy while others are hard enough to sustain construction processes. Every felt material is described on the basis of a few features that include:

Content of fiber in the felt

Color of the felt

Size and thickness of the felt

Density and many other physical factors related to the purpose for which the felt is manufactured.

One very frequently used and common available form of felt is wool felt.

What is Wool Felt?

Wool felt is a type of felt textile that is fire-retardant and extinguishes on itself. This type of felt material is produced using the process of wet felting. Wet felting involves the use of water or moisture, a lubrication agent like soap and the friction process that can be done manually by using your hands. This process leads to the entangling of various fibers and as a consequence a wool Felt is produced.

Hence we see that wool felt is primarily a non-woven textile material that can be used for various purposes. The impure form of wool felt contains at least 30% wool components, as without it there cannot be the creation of a stable fabric. So if you are looking for fire-resistant textiles then you should consider buying wool felts.

It can be used for making paddings and linings or it can be utilized in craft making and as warm fabrics. Decoration felt is a very useful material used in the creation of different types of arts and crafts. Some felts are used in construction while some are employed in musical instruments. There is a wide variety of felt polishing materials also being marketing in the industry. According to the purpose, the felt is produced and used. One such example is the Decoration Felt. Because of the fact that this material can be easily cut into shapes and does not leave out threads hanging from the edges it is most popular for kids crafts and handmade gifts. The decoration felts is a very useful material and is especially used for making Christmas ornaments and decoration items. You can also get such ideas from the internet.

Felt as a Textile:

The fabrics and cloths in general are made from spinning or weaving of different kinds of fibers and threads. However, felt is a kind of a textile or fabric that is made without any weaving or warp or weft. This type of textile is produced through a series of activities involving matting and compression of fibers or furs and does not utilize any thread or weaving element. The process of rolling and pressing is mostly done in an environment which gives moisture, pressure and heat to the Felt making it matte and smooth to form a fabric. Felts may be constituted from a combination of wool and synthetic fibers such as acrylic or it can be made from 100% synthetic materials. It all depends on the purpose that it is being created for. Every type of felt varies in size, thickness, density, color and fiber usage. It is a multi-purpose material and can help you making several crafts.

Introduction

Felt polishing materials are products that are developed and manufactured by designers who conscientiously keep details regarding customer requirements in mind. Felt polishing material that is well designed and produced is acclaimed by most people, because of its corrosion resistance, dimensional accuracy, high performance and long working life.

Felt polishing material can be made of compressed wool fibers that are mostly likely to work together with all the compounds. They can also be used for other purposes such as finishing of operations and also can be used to maintain flat surfaces and maintain sharp and flat edges. Felt bobs can be used with a variety of shapes and they are mostly preferred because they are able to get into hard to reach areas. It should be well maintained to ensure that it exists for a longer period and that its owner gets the best out of the material. Felt polishing material can be designed using in house facilities. Some of the features of felt polishing material that are acclaimed by people are high efficiency, low maintenance and rigid construction. Felt polishing material can be used for all types of surfaces and it is likely to give the client a lasting protection surface. Felt polishing can be turned into liquid form and it has features similar to gold & silver jewelry and brass.

Conclusion

Along with felt polishing material a polishing brush should be designed and in order for it to work well with the felt polishing material it must be available with bristle fill and brass. Diamond brushes should also be used with both metal polish and diamond compound. The sourcing of felt polishing material is exclusive and should be acquired from inexpensive sources so that the final product becomes affordable.

Many cultures have claimed that felt making has originated from their legends. Sumerian legends have said that the discovery of felt making was done by Urnamman of Lagash. There is a story of the discovery of felt that Saint Christopher and Saint Clement were running from persecution, so to prevent blisters they wrapped their sandals with wool. When their journey ended they found out that the wool had turned into felt due to the sweat and the movement of the sandals in the wool.

The fibers are matted in a web in the carding machine.

Mostly two carding machines are used in the process, to refine the web.

After carding is done, the carded web is removed by a comb. The web can be removed by two types, either by a cross lapper or by a vlamir.

Then the webs are joined together to make a thick web, and layered on one another.

The separate batts are matted and shrunk in width and length, to make a dense felt.

Next the batts are put into fulling machine that shrinks the material in a specific measurement.

The wet felt is run through a neutralizing tank to remove the residue of sulfuric acid.

The material is heavily rolled over for the last time to remove all regularities.

The felt is then dried in a spinner and the excess water is removed.

Finally the felt is kept on gaging table and the edges are neatly trimmed. The felt is ready to be dispatched now.

Earlier in the middle age the fur was removed by hand from the hide and hot water and pressure was applied with hands to shrink the fabric together manually. Whereas today machinery is used to do these tasks, but the requirement to make felt remains the same.

There is an exception, that till the end of nineteenth century, the processing of felt was done with mercury. It was discovered that mercury had ill effects on the people who were using mercury to produce felt. It was a sort of poisoning which led to hallucinations, tremors and of sorts of psychotic syndromes. The hat makers were termed as ‘mad hatter’ because of psychotic symptoms that cropped from the poisoning caused by mercury. The hats made from felt materials were quite popular in winter months.

So who are the felt products made?

The fibers are dyed after carding. Dyeing can either be done by machine or hand, though machine dyeing is preferred over hand dyeing from fast color. After the coloring process the labors press the raw material with hands with hot water and soap. There are no chemical additives and the felt product is fully handmade.

While the felt is still wet, it is given the shape of the product that has to be made. No patching or sewing is done to shape the product; the shaping is done by hand. With a systematic way of rubbing and hand manipulation with the help of hot water the desired shape is achieved and then is sun dried.

The animal skins were put in the oven and dried, in this process the skin on the sides turned orange, similar to the color of carrots. The skin was then placed under a cutting machine and was sliced into thin shreds. The fur was blow dried on a conical shaped colander and there after dipped in boiling water to keep the shape as it is. The cone was then removed and passed under a wet roller to turn the fur into felt. The hoods that were derived in the process were blocked and dyed to make hats. The vapors and the poisonous solution of the dye resulted in mercury poisoning to the makers which gave a rise to the term ‘mad as a hatter’.

First of all make the shape of a mitten on a piece of paper. Then cut it out. Make use of this pattern to cut the top layer of mitten from the felt of wool. Select the design that you want to make out of that mitten, then cut out shapes that are solid from the different colours of wool felt. Put the mitten on the top of the felting brush and arrange the pieces of felt. Use the tools of felting and take the instructions of the manufacturer. Continue adding and layering the pieces of felt on one another till the design is complete. Cut the piece of cuff and try and reach the desired thinckness. Tack the cuff to the top of the mitten with the help of felting needle tool. Place the felting brush on the top of the mitten and save the two layers together. To finish the sewing of mitten use felted balls to the right corner of the cuff using making some embroidery and a large cross-stitch. Add a hanging loop to make it look fancy.
